Small Firms Beware – ZeuS Trojan Can Steal Your Money

The days are gone when the effects of a Trojan or virus attack are limited to your computer or your network. The threat commonly called ZeuS or ZBot is just one tool of an international cybercrime ring with one goal – to steal your money. You can pick up the ZeuS infection through a drive-by download from a malicious Web site, from a perfectly valid site that's been hacked or by simply clicking on a link in an innocent-looking e-mail such as a false LinkedIn connection request.

A growing number of small firms are being infected with malware that enables hackers to take over the wire transfer and ACH origination capabilities in their Internet Banking. Because the consumer protection laws do not cover small businesses, more and more banks are holding their business customers responsible for amount embezzled from their accounts by these hackers. Often five figures sums are being embezzled. That is why it is critical that small businesses have strong, updated malware detection software on their computers and take advantage of ALL security features available from the internet banking system such as requiring 2 different employees to authenticate to the system to send a wire transfer request or ACH origination and using hard tokens for authentication if available from their bank.

Business customers can often provide their bank with a list identifying the entities to which wire transfers and/or ACHs may be sent providing a back-end control where the system will not send payment transfers to entities that are not on that list. If the bank does allow wires to go through to entities not on that list, the business customer has a defense to prompt the bank to reimburse them.
